Monoprint workshop
I seriously enjoyed my monoprint workshop in the studio today with my Saturday afternoon group.
I’m no expert at monoprints, but a little experience with my sister Kate Milner and her friends Sarah Russel and Susan Erskin Jones persuaded me that this kind of printing can be fun and inspiring.

Very few materials are needed for making monoprints; a plate of glass, some rollers, printing ink and cheap paper. There is no need of a press, smoothing and pressing down over the back of the paper is sufficient. We all worked with black printer’s ink on plates of glass. The images produced can be surprising and often very beautiful due to the interesting textures which are obtained and the fluidity of the line.
We were using mainly photocopy paper, which works well, but doesn’t allow for watercolour application afterwards, some students took several prints from the same inked glass and then experimented using pastel or adding charcoal and finer brush work.
Here are some of the images completed in our afternoon session.
I hope the students enjoyed it as much as I did. It was a real pleasure and surprise to see their curiosity and watch the monoprints appear:
