Exhibition at “Le tympan” in Goujounac
I’m very proud to be showing some of my work throughout the month of August in the gallery ‘Le Tympan’ Goujounac 46, with my son Samuel Prewett.
We chose the theme of ‘Mythology and imagination’. I’ve been fascinated by the Greek Myths since an early age. Born in 1961, before internet or even television, my imagination was formed by fairy stories, Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and others. I’ve long had the impression that these images have had an influence on how I view the world. The people that I paint are as close to a likeness as possible, but also they can be considered as representations of humanity throughout the ages, characters like ‘The fool’ or ‘The siren’ or ‘the animal charmer’. Ancient Greek mythology and stories from the old testament of the bible, give us many such recurring characters.
The story of ‘Danaé is a subject tackled by many artists, including Rembrandt and Titian. (Danaé, seduced by Zeus in a shower of gold) gives licence to enjoy painting the female body enhanced by exceptional lighting, taking the nude out of contemporary culture and all the conations that brings.
Born in 1985, Samuel absorbed other influences. Films and the internet were a vital part of his upbringing as well as comic books, so when Samuel places figures into the world of his imagination, his influences are more contemporary. But still there is a desire for story telling, and his imagination is enriched by mythology.
While travelling in South Korea with a group of other students from Nantes Art school, Samuel did some work around the ancient Korean legend of the Tiger and the Bear, (the bear transforming into a woman who married a prince, leading to the formation of the country.) These large drawings can be seen at the exhibition.
With a love of the natural world, much of Samuel’s drawings transform the landscape into repetitious organic lines representing mountains or tree bark worked in intricate detail. Both patience and energy are present in each image, a good example being ‘Daisies in a storm’
Samuel Prewett is currently residing in the Reunion islands and working on drawings of the wild inland mountain landscape.
The exhibition at the Tympan can be viewed each Thursday from 15h and Saturday from 11h- 14h, or by appointment; 06 09 53 69 47
