Winter landscapes
In the valley the sun rises late over the hill to the south and it’s mid morning before light falls on the garden.
From inside the house, I’ve watched the blues of the frost in shadow receed as warmth moves across the garden. This year I went out to sketch and considered it from the other way round. The play of complimentary colours was a fascinating challenge.
With the promise of a cloudless sky, I wrapped up warm and took my painting materials out into the garden, and then further afield down the lane. Each attempt seems like a compromise, dealing not only with the shadows moving, but the grasses under them literally changing colour.
